Join us for a riveting conversation with best-selling author and Pulitzer Prize winner Gretchen Morgenson about her latest work, These are the Plunderers: How Private Equity Runs – and Wrecks – America, investigating the thirty-year history of corporate takeovers in the US and private equity’s increasing dominance through greed and pillaging. Gretchen and co-author Joshua Rosner expose how the biggest players in the industry buy companies, load them with debt, and then bleed them of assets and profits. All while prosecutors and regulators stand idle as workers, consumers, and the economy suffer in the aftermath.

About the author:
Gretchen Morgenson is the senior financial reporter for the NBC News Investigative Unit. A former stockbroker, she won the Pulitzer Prize in 2002 for her “trenchant and incisive” reporting on Wall Street. Previously at The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, she and coauthor Joshua Rosner wrote the New York Times bestseller Reckless Endangerment: How Outsized Ambition, Greed, and Corruption Led to Economic Armageddon about the mortgage crisis.
About the moderator:
Eileen Appelbaum is Co-Director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, a Fellow at Rutgers University Center for Women and Work, and Visiting Professor at the University of Leicester, UK. Before joining CEPR, she held positions as a Distinguished Professor and Director of the Center for Women and Work at Rutgers University and Professor of Economics at Temple University. She holds a PhD in economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Appelbaum’s research focuses on organizational restructuring and outcomes for firms and workers; private equity and financialization; and work-family policies. Private Equity at Work: When Wall Street Manages Main Street, coauthored with Rosemary Batt, was selected by the Academy of Management as one of the four best books of 2014 and 2015, and was a finalist for the 2016 George R. Terry award.
