The article is about the failed budget compromise between Obama and House Speaker Boehner, which would have included “significant future savings from Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.” The New York Times is calling this deal a “lost opportunity” since the growth of these programs is “driving long-term projections of unsustainable debt.” Dean Baker over at Beat the Press points out it’s not the programs that are the problem, it’s growing health care costs and misinformation over Social Security.
